The Greenspace Committee worked extensively in Walter Bradley City Park for years maintaining trails, planting trees, working with schoolchildren on various projects, and clearing the woods of invasive species.
We are responsible for the initiation or facilitation of:
- Creating the City's tree nursery
- Obtaining the City's designation as a 'Tree City USA' for five years in a row
- Organizing Arbor Day events with the City
- Planting and caring for several hundred trees in the Midway Cemetery and the Walter Bradley City Park
- Developing the landscape at Walter Bradley City Park
- Maintaining and improving trails
- Removing invasive species
- Establishing and maintaining a native species garden
- Organizing and conducting educational workshops for grade school children
- Partnering with the City to restore Lees Branch Creek
Current initiatives include
- GRO - Greenspace Reaches Out - providing assistance with small-scale flower garden and landscaping tasks to our neighbors with disabilities, who cannot manage these jobs alone.
- Requesting funding from the Safe Routes to School Program for a pedestrian bridge and sidewalk improvements in order to move children more safely to and from Midway's elementary school and the bustling downtown
- Conducting Rain Garden Seminars and demonstration projects
In addition to regular work days, the Greenspace Committee also holds monthly meetings to identify additional projects and discuss ideas.
